Livestock and Poultry Rearing

Almost whole of the district barring the district Head Quarter and some other small towns depend upon agriculture and allied sector for livelihood. Among these Livestock rearing is the most important one. A few years back availability of milk and curd after early hours in the morning was a rarity. But today milk and its products, poultry meat and eggs are available at any time of the day in all townships of the district. Due to availability of the cheaper poultry meat, the prices of mutton are not very high otherwise prices of the mutton would have been sky rocketing.

The increased milk production has not only filled up the deficit of the requirement but outpaced the human population growth. Abundant and comparatively cheaper animal products/ proteins have improved the health and life expectancy of man.

The department is running Veterinary institution in all the blocks of this district. There is also one hatchery in the district which produces quality low input technology birds for establishment of backyard poultry units to supplement the income of the farmers and supplies to breeders at comparatively cheaper rates. A full-fledged poultry development and extension wing is also functioning in the district which provides technical and other inputs to poultry breeders like vaccines and medicines at cheaper/subsidised rates. About 200 breeders are rearing poultry farms of various capacities to enhance poultry production to supplement the requirement of meat.
